BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY RIDE Prologue - Day 0
Good evening. Back again for another cycling adventure. We have arrived in Waynesboro, Virginia at the Days Inn. As we pulled up it felt like de javu seeing the two story motel with exterior doors directly into the rooms. The drive from Indianapolis took us just about 10 hours including a stop at Arby’s for lunch. Hopefully the last chain restaurant until heading home.
We are driving a 15 passenger Ford van, with the back seats out to accommodate the five bicycles. My father, “Tonto”, once again will be driving the SAG. The cyclists include Tom King, Mark Lawrence, Kevin Fry and myself. We will be joined on Sunday afternoon by Jim Cunning.
Tomorrow will begin a seven day tour, heading from north to south, of the Blue Ridge Parkway. We have a wonderful day ahead with the weather predicted to be starting in the mid-60″s and going up to the mid-90″s, with medium humidity and light winds. The day will be a big day with approximately 8,500 vertical feet of ascention over an 85 mile distance. After the first 63 miles, ascending some 5,200 feet, we arrive at the lowest point on the parkway and then proceed to climb the final 3.300 feet in a single climb over a 12 mile distance. Nice way to finish up the first day!
We just finished eating at the South River Grill & Wine Shop, a nice local place with good food and friendly service. The wine and beer were only adequate, but sufficient and the meal and dessert were both quite nice. Started off with a banana foster frozen pie. Wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to eat pie again every day!
Well we will start up the day with breakfast at 6:00, drive to the start point a couple of miles away and begin the ride. Oh yes, the first climb of the day begins at mile 3 with a short 1,100 foot ascention. Hope I don’t see my breakfast again. Good night.

Food review? Not particularly compelling. The suggestion that breakfast might be in view twice was definitely a dude comment. Male bonding complete.
Praying that you all have a safe trip! Understand there were some minor issues the first few days, but hopefully all turned out fine and the weather has cooled off for you! We at the museum are anxiously awaiting word on how things are going…be safe!
p.s. In honor of your ride, I had my first 30-mile biking day last week and have copied it twice since then.
