Content vs. Clutter
I recently stopped to think about the incredible amount of clutter that we deal with everyday. Think of just about any news web site: all those garish animated advertisements competing for your attention, festering around the edges of the ever-more-marginalized content. As a user, these types of sites make me feel like a figure trapped in the middle of a Hieronymus Bosch painting, surrounded by grotesque scenes on all sides. On a visit to a popular search engine page, I counted at least 79 items that one could click on; only 6 of those actually related to the search engine. While these busy pages theoretically offer “more,” the quantity of superfluous “stuff” complicates and distracts from the site’s central function: to deliver content.
